Family and youth services
Regretfully in the light of the current situation we have limited public worship, events and group gatherings, including Family & Youth events in the parish for the foreseeable future. Currently only Breakfast Church and our Family Service on the 1st Sunday of the month are currently running. In order to manage social distancing we have to limit the number of people at each service, please see the details on the home page for how to book attendance for a service.
St James’ is a place where families are welcomed and you can find something for everyone. All of our 10am Sunday services are family friendly with worship for all ages or kids activities. These look a little different depending on the week in the month!
You are always welcome to have your little ones in the main church so do grab a toy from the baptistry (on the left as you enter the church) or take a toy bag to your pew to keep them occupied. If you would prefer more privacy you can enjoy the service though the speakers in the baptistry whilst the little ones play uninterrupted. There are toilet facilities available.
Family service 1st Sunday of the month
We have all-age worship together in the church with some more modern worship songs, ‘what’s in the box’ to introduce our theme and a service aimed at being inclusive for all ages.
Breakfast Church 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month
Over in the hall, let the smell of bacon drifting down the road lead you to our breakfast church. This is a less formal service as we have some breakfast together round tables as we gather for more contemporary style worship, and there is a group for young people down in the office while we have a short talk and discussion. There is a play area for toddlers and you don’t need to be worried about kids joining in as noisily as they like!
3rd and 4th Sundays of the month in the parish hall
On these weeks we start in the church for the 1st hymn then head over to the hall with primary aged children (and younger ones if accompanied by a parent/carer!)
3rd Sunday is Bible2go where we share a story form the bible which the children then recreate in Lego! Their masterpieces are then shared with the congregation back in the church at the end of the service.
4th Sunday is a ‘sing and snack’ session where we learn and sing action hymns, chat and pray over a snack.
Where there are 5 Sundays in a month we make it up as we go along… but there is always something!
Friends of God (FROG) is aimed at those in year 7 to 9 and is on a 3rd and 4th Sunday of the month. It starts in the church office (round the side of the hall) before the service starts and have drinks, snacks and think about a bible truth or topic suitable for this age group. It’s an informal, fun-loving group who would always welcome new people to drop in and give it a go!
Our Sunday evening Youth group meets every Sunday (apart from the 1st Sunday of the month) from 6.30pm til 8pm. For school years 7 and older. This term we will be looking at Jesus’ life through Mark’s gospel. Please contact Jon White (07717 778103) or Aaron Todd (07970 494734) for details.
Babies, Biscuits & Banter
We have a much loved baby group from 9.30 – 11am on a Tuesday morning held in the office. This is aimed at newborns to just moving babies and it is a safe place for babies to start interacting and mums to chat over coffee and cake/ biscuits. It has a really friendly atmosphere which is perfect for first time mums to find friendship and support.
If you would like to find out more about any of our groups please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
